The Freddo Index, issue 01
Where to find a €2.20 freddo. A neighborhood price map for Athens.
Nobody orders a flat white when it's 34°C. Freddo is what Athens drinks, and lately everyone complains about its price. ΕΛΣΤΑΤ, the national statistics service, recorded a 18.5% rise in coffee prices between August 2024 and August 2025, with green coffee at 45-year highs. The gap between neighborhoods is now big enough to plan a walk around.
First, a note about the data. The state tracks your supermarket basket to the cent. E-katanalotis.gov.gr and the PosoKanei app collect daily prices from every major chain, but no public registry lists café prices. The closest official data is ΕΛΣΤΑΤ's CPI price collection, which publishes mean freddo espresso prices per area. Rows marked ΕΛΣΤΑΤ are official means. Rows marked menu check are our September 2026 spot prices where no official price is available.

| Glyfada | €2.20–3.50 | ΕΛΣΤΑΤ range |
Glyfada's wide official range has two explanations. The riviera has both bargain counters and €3.50 waterfront tables. Delivery prices also run higher than counter prices (Pricefox's 2025 delivery study tops Athens freddo espresso at €2.90 and freddo cappuccino at €3.20; in-hand in Kolonaki the cappuccino reached €4.50). Our map tracks the counter.
Where the €2.20 freddo still lives
Koukaki's €2.20 isn't legend. It's the official mean. Peristeri and Kifisia hold the low band too, and Piraeus' roastery counters can still clear €2.50 without tasting like a compromise. Exarchia and Kypseli hold the middle: the new-wave bars there price for regulars, not for foot traffic.
One exception is Polyamorous on Ippokratous, a grocery-café where the freddo stays near €2.70 while produce crates double as décor. In Pangrati, Kross keeps a roaster-grade freddo at €2.90, which is as close as the specialty scene gets to kafeneio pricing.
What your coffee pays for
Part of every cup is tax, not coffee. Café drinks carry 13% VAT, and the beans themselves pay a special consumption tax (ΕΦΚ) on top of import prices that jumped as coffee futures rose ~50% through 2025. The Hellenic Coffee Association is publicly lobbying to scrap it. Nobody official publishes the café's real cost per cup, so we will not guess. The tax share alone helps explain the €2.20 freddo's rise in price.
The rest is time. Every café below is one where a single freddo still buys you a real sit, in neighborhoods where that's the point.
